What skill actually does
A winning player is still a gambler with an edge. The edge shows up over a sample. The sample includes downswings that last months. You can be a favorite in a hand and a dog in a year if the roll is too small, the games are too hard, or you are playing to feel something. Solver work does not make the river less expensive. ICM does not make the rent appear.
We publish bankroll numbers as a fuse: cash ~30 buy-ins with a written move-down near 20; MTTs ~100; SNGs ~50. Those numbers assume you can take the loss without hiding it. If the buy-in is the rent, you do not have a bankroll. You have a problem wearing a HUD.
Signs it is not "just variance"
- Chasing: reloading after a cooler because the universe "owes you a pot."
- Hiding play: extra sessions, extra stakes, extra rooms the people who live with you do not know about.
- Staking the rent, the tuition, the card, the money that is not labeled "poker."
- Borrowing to play, including "short-term" from a friend who thinks it is a business loan.
- Time you cannot account for, sleep you cannot find, work you cannot finish because you were looking for a game.
- The study stack becoming a justification instead of a tool: "I can't stop, I'm close to crushing."
Tilt is a street. Addiction is a life. They share a face at 3 a.m. They are not the same diagnosis, and you do not get to talk yourself out of the second by naming the first.
Starting over — a rewrite, with dignity
Years ago this domain ran an essay from a player who called himself Corndog, about trying to put a gambling problem down and pick a life back up. We are not reprinting that HTML. We are keeping the only part that still matters: the admission.
You can be good at this and still need to stop. You can know ranges and still lie about a session. You can quote ICM in the hallway and still shove the card because sitting with yourself is worse. The old piece was not a joke about a degenerate. It was a person trying to start over without pretending the cards would apologize.
If that is you: the fold is allowed. Walk. Use the numbers at the top of this page. Tell one person. Do not "take a shot" at a bigger stake to win it back. That is not a line. That is the same hand, bigger.
If that is someone you sit with: you are not their solver. You can refuse to stake them. You can refuse to joke about it. You can send them here and then stop being the person who enables the next bullet.
How we will treat this on the rest of the site
Responsible play sits in the hero of the homepage, in the nav, and in the footer. We do not run ads against the help list on this page. We do not use "responsible gambling" as wallpaper under a signup button — we do not have signup buttons. 18+ (21+ where that is the local line).
Study is not a cure. If you came here to get sharper and you are actually here to get even, start with the helpline, not the strategy hub.
FAQ
Is poker gambling even if I am a winning player?
Yes. Skill changes the shape of the distribution. It does not delete variance or risk of ruin. Bankroll management is harm reduction, not a promise you cannot go broke.
Where do I get help?
United States: 1-800-GAMBLER (800-426-2537) and ncpgambling.org. Also Gamblers Anonymous. UK and elsewhere: BeGambleAware and GamCare. Use a local helpline if you are not in the US.
