Ace-King offsuit. You have been waiting to play this hand all session like it is a personality. It is not. It is a strong, non-nut, dominated-sometimes holding that prints against worse Ace-x and dies to two pair and sets. Treat it like a range, not a destiny.

2.5x is the 2026 default, not a "weak" open. 3-bet to a little over 3x the open is standard in position versus a cutoff who can fold. Calling the 3-bet from the cutoff with a range that includes pocket pairs, suited Broadway, and some suited connectors is also standard. You do not get to assume you are "ahead of his range" just because you hold Ace-King. You are ahead of some of it. You are flipping some of it. You are crushed by QQ+ and the occasional Ace-King that has you dominated on suits you do not have.

Dry ace-high, two-tone, no broadway extras. Hero owns the range: all the Ace-King, Ace-Queen, Ace-Jack, some Ace-x that 3-bet, plus the slow-played pairs that didn't 4-bet. Villain's continuing range for a call is pocket pairs that didn't smash, Ace-x that isn't folding an ace, and some 9x/backdoors. Range advantage is ours. Nut advantage is mixed — we have the Ace-King, he has more sets in a flatting range (99, 44, and 22-88 that peeled). SPR 5 is the danger zone: plenty of room to get it in by the river, not so deep that we can "just take a small street and go home."
C-bet small is the 2026 line. $18 into $35 is about half pot. You do not need to pot this. You want worse Ace-x to continue and pairs to peel. Overbetting here turns a value-heavy range into a polar one you do not have yet.

This is the street the hand actually lives on. The nine pairs. Our top pair is still top pair. It is also now second pair to anyone who had a nine, and it is still crushed by 44 that just filled a boat. Villain's check-raise to $110 is a serious size: not a tiny probe, not an all-in yet. He leaves $56 behind, which is a sprinkle. That sprinkle is how people talk themselves into calling "because I have to see a river."
Twenty-three percent is cheap if his range is a mix of nines, bluffs, and the occasional 44. It is not cheap if his range is "nines and boats." Population at these stakes check-raises this turn too wide — leftover Ace-x that "doesn't believe you," gutshots, even King-Queen that decided today is the day. A competent TAG with 8k hands does it narrower. Believe the sample, not the story you want.
Calling is not a crime. The crime is calling without a plan for the last $56. If you call here, the river is not a new decision. The river is "does the brick change anything." Most bricks do not.
River:
The decision
Turn call is a price. River call is a ritual. $56 into $291 is 56/347 ≈ 16%. You need to be good one time in six. Quad nines is not the whole of his jam range, but boats (44), nines (A9s that flatted a 3-bet, 98s, 99), and the rare bluff (spade-blocked missed clubs, King-Queen that ran a story) are the menu. Against this specific TAG, the bluff frequency is not high enough to make the river a snap. It is also not low enough to make the fold a hero fold you write home about. It is a thin, ugly, slightly losing call that a lot of solvers still mix because the price is so small.
What GTO would consider
Solver-land 3-bets Ace-King here 100%. C-bets this flop almost always. On the paired turn, mixed: some Ace-King keeps betting for thin value vs Ace-x and 88-77 that still peel; some Ace-King checks back because the nine is a scare card for the exact range that called a flop c-bet. Once raised, Ace-King is a call at this SPR more often than recs want to hear, and a fold more often than the "top pair never folds" crowd wants to hear. The mix exists because both 44 and air live in his raise. Sample: this villain's fold-to-cbet is 42%, not 70%. He continues. He is allowed to have it.
What the population does
Population jams turn with TPTK and calls any river. Population also check-raises this turn with every nine and every "I don't believe you." The overlap is how graphs become ski slopes. Recs treat Ace-King as the nuts on any Ace-high board. It is not. It is top pair, top kicker, which is a strong one-pair hand. One-pair hands lose stacks to two pair, sets, and boats. Verdict: cooler, with a small spew on the river call
The money went in on a street where you were drawing dead to quads and crushed by boats. That is a cooler. The extra $56 on a brick, against a TAG who is not randomly jamming King-Queen, is the spew. Small one. Do not let it become a personality. And do not let it talk you into folding TPTK every time a nine pairs — that is how you get printed by every delayed barrel.
