You are supposed to fold it because three extra min-cashes in the field are worth more than your extra 12bb when it goes in bad. Last reviewed August 31, 2026 · MTT bubble Game. $109 online MTT, 1,200 runners, 180 paid. 183 left. You are on the actual bubble, plus a rounding error. Blinds 800/1,600 with a 1,600 big-blind ante. Hero in the small blind with 19,200 (12bb). A cover in the big blind: 64,000 (40bb). UTG is a 9bb stack who has been blinding off. Two other tables still have sub-8bb walking wounded. Payout jump from 0 to ~$220 for the min-cash. First is ~$22k. You are not playing for first with 12bb. You are playing for whether tonight's graph includes a min-cash or a story about Ace-Jack. [Hero's hole cards] Ace-Jack offsuit. In a cash game at 12bb this is often a jam from the small blind. In a satellite this is an instant fold. This is neither. It is a regular MTT with a real payout curve, which means ICM is real and your ego is not a node. PREFLOP — 12bb effective vs a cover folds to hero in the SB. BB is a cover, TAG-ish, not a maniac, has shown down two value-heavy 3-bets in the last orbit. Hero folds. BB takes the blinds and ante. Pot you gave up: 4,000 chips (2.5bb of dead money). People will tell you this is weak. People who say that are quoting chip EV from a cash-game tree they memorized in 2014. Let us do both maths, because [ICM](/strategy/icm-and-tournament-ladder) is not a vibe. ## Chip EV wants the jam ROUGH CHIP EV, SB vs BB, 12bb, BB ante Dead money: SB 800 + BB 1,600 + ante 1,600 = 4,000 If you jam 19,200, BB is getting 19,200 to win 4,000+19,200 after calling? Call 17,600 more (they already have 1,600 in) to win 4,000 + 19,200 = 23,200. Price ≈ 17,600 / (23,200 + 17,600) ≈ 43%. Ace-Jack offsuit vs a reasonable BB calling range (pairs, AJ+, KQ, some suited Broadway) has ~45–52% equity depending how wide they call. Fold equity vs a cover who does not need to gamble: real. Against a calling station, not real. In a vacuum, jamming Ace-Jack here is not a punchline. The blinds plus ante are a meal. Ace-Jack is not 72o. If this were a cash table, or 400 people off the money, you ship it and you do not write an article about your feelings. ## Dollar EV wants the fold 183 left, 180 paid. Three people must bust. There are already two stacks under 8bb at other tables who have not found a hand. You have 12bb. You are not the shortest. The cover in the big blind can eliminate you. If you jam and lose, your tournament equity goes from "almost certainly ITM, plus some leftover chance to run it up" to zero. If you fold, you lose 800 chips plus your share of waiting, and you let the shorties do the dying. BUBBLE FACTOR, PLAIN Min-cash $220. Your current chip EV share of the remaining prize pool is much larger than $220 because 12bb with 183 left is not nothing — but the first $220 is the steepest part of the curve. Risking elimination for ~2.5bb of dead money, when three shorter stacks exist, is buying a coin flip with a bill that includes the min-cash you were about to be handed for free. Bubble factor on a cover vs a shorty is ugly. Calling off 12bb to bust you is cheap for him and fatal for you. That asymmetry is the whole point of ICM. This is the part recs refuse: folding Ace-Jack can be the nuts play and still feel like a punt. Feelings are not $EV. The fold is +$EV and −cEV. Those two numbers are allowed to disagree. That disagreement is the format. Read the pillar. Then come back and look at this hand again without the adrenaline. Two hands later the 9bb UTG stack finally wakes up with Ace-Ten, jams, and the cover in the cutoff looks up with King-Queen. The board runs: [Two hands later: King of hearts, seven of clubs, two of spades, nine of diamonds, four of hearts] King-high holds. The short stack is gone. You are 182 left with 11.5bb and a min-cash that is now a rounding error away. You did not get to see that movie when you mucked Ace-Jack. You never do. You fold because the expected value of letting the short stack go first is higher than the expected value of flipping with a cover. If the short stack had tripled instead, the fold would still have been right. Results are not the teacher. The ladder is the teacher. ## What GTO / ICM models consider A chip-EV Nash chart jams a mountain of Ace-x from the small blind at 12bb. An ICM model with 183 left, 180 paid, and a cover behind you, rips that range down toward pairs and Ace-Queen+, sometimes Ace-Jack suited, often not Ace-Jack offsuit. The exact cell depends on the pay table and how many 4bb stacks are still breathing. The shape does not: you fold hands that are jams in cash. If your "ICM" is just "I tighten up a bit," you are still playing cash on a tournament clock. ## What the population does Population jams here because Ace-Jack "looks like a hand" and because folding feels like letting the big stack bully you. Population also open-folds 22 UTG with 14bb two off the money, which is the opposite leak. Both leaks are ICM illiteracy wearing different hats. Some players "fold to the money" with 40bb and Ace-Queen, which is how you min-cash yourself into a dead range. Some players never fold anything bigger than jack-ten, which is how you bubble with a hero call in the comments. The correct exploitation of a field that over-shoves the bubble is to wait, then play pots after the burst with a stack that still exists. Calling 12bb jams with King-Queen offsuit to "look up a bully" three from the money. Complaining that ICM is "scared money" while posting the bubble as a cooler. It is not a cooler. It is a pay table. ## When to deviate If the big blind is an 11bb stack who cannot comfortably cover you, the jam comes back. If the remaining shorties are nits who will never bust, you may have to take the coin. If you are the chip leader, you are the one applying this pressure, not eating it. Cover vs covered is the whole seat. Satellite structures make this fold even more automatic — you are not paid for first. Verdict: hero fold, +$EV, −cEV, not a spew The sick feeling is the tell that you understood the math. If it felt easy, you were probably folding too much of your range in general.
